Lunch For The Sky
Socratic

[review by Jess]

Girls, imagine Socratic are your boyfriend…no, make that husband. Socratic aren’t boyfriend material, they’re husband material. If they were your husband they’d tell you you looked ‘nice’ when you’d tried to look ‘sexy’. They’d tell you your skirt was too short or that your top was too tight. Boys, if Socratic were your girlfriend they’d buy you a pink jumper for Christmas and make you wearing it saying “of course you don’t look camp in it dear!” Socratic are nice. Socratic are the sort of band you want to marry. There’s no lust involved, you’d much rather fall for Atreyu , but Socratic are safe and sensible with songs which say “Hey all you screamo, what’s the deal when any talent that you lack is covered up by the fact that you can scream loud, really loud, and say things that were said before, every lyric that you sing, it sounds the same.” They’re the sort of band who’d listen to Bach, own their own vegetable patches and make their own clothes using just a needle and a sheep.

With flourishing piano solos, farcical lyrics and eye-pleasing artwork they seem to share more than a passing resemblance to a certain band called Something Corporate. They lack the singalong choruses but replace them with songs that tell their own stories, for example with ‘Alexandria As Our Lens, “Alexandria drives a school bus as she stares back at empty seats, reminds her she will never have kids…she fed all her friends to get really fat so no one would notice them, all eyes must be on the Royal Alexandria”. Satirical and intelligent, Socratic use their talented pianist to his full advantage leaving this album open to fans of many different genres.

Each song on this album is lovely. ‘Tear A Gash’ will have you dancing round your living room playing your best air piano. There’s a hint of Elton John behind ‘Tear A Gash’, a touch of Santana on ‘I Am The Doctor’ whilst Taking Back Sunday could have easily written ‘We Burn Houses’.

If you want to listen to an album that leaves you with a warm glow inside, ‘Lunch For The Sky’ is just the ticket. It’s pretty, intelligent and easy on the ear with lyrics that are bitter enough to keep you alert. Worth the money but I don’t think I’ll be wearing my repeat button out with Socratic any time soon.
