With the sudden craze of bands that sound like Fall Out Boy and Panic! At the Disco, the band Slide Show Baby can almost be thrown into that category but they have the unique perspective of adding in different instruments to make it a tad Celtic sounding.
I have never even heard of this band before receiving this CD and after reviewing albums that are not partial to my musical taste my ears were happy to hear a band that I would actual listen to in my everyday life. Moving Too Fast the second track on their debut album is the one that grabbed my attention first, mainly for the fiddle adding a refreshing sound to a song that could have been just like any other pop/punk song. It is a really easy album to listen too and the songs blend nicely together and you can tell this is a band that knows their sound and does not try and be all over the place. That is until you get to The Boozehound, the all instrumental track. I am down for a good fiddle/bagpipe listen anytime, but not for 4 minutes straight. I kept waiting for the vocals to break in, and it never happened. Well more like 7 minutes if you include track 7 What the Funk which sounds exactly like the previous all instrumental song.
These boys have an age range from 18-21 and their musical style as a band would make you second guess that they are such a young band. Lyrically their songs are relatable to young kids and you can almost imagine kids at shows singing along with vocalist Will MacMorran. Especially on the track The Fall Out which has more force than any of the other tracks.
Closing out the album is yet again, another all instrumental track entitled Outro. This one is slower and has a closing vibe to it, so I did not mind listening to it, but the other ones should not have made it onto the album. Getting nine out of eleven tracks right on a debut album is enough to make me forgive them for those two all instrumental tracks. For an album this good on their first try, I can only imagine how amazing their next album is going to be.
