ONE LAST HOPE

May 13, 2004
[interview by Jason]

Estrella: Could you please state your name and what you do in the band.
Chris: Chris - Lead vocals, Brady - Bass/vocals, Eric - Drums, and Jason - Guitar/vocals

Estrella: How long has the band been around for?
Chris: About three years playing the bar scene. Only recently did we start playing all ages shows. But I joined the band just recently in 2004.

Estrella: How did all the members meet?
Chris: Brady met Jason and Eric at a job actually. They all work at a telemarketing place. And Jason and Eric are cousins, so they knew each other before hand. And then I was actually a roadie before I was in the band. When recording the latest EP, "A Tribute to Preston" I came up with some back up vocals and asked if I could try some out. It just so happened I could sing, and things went on from there.

Estrella: Who are some of your influences?
Chris: Face to Face is definitely the biggest influence to all of us. That’s probably one of the things that made us want to play together. And there are plenty of other bands that we all look up to. Coheed and Cambria, The Used, Alkaline Trio, Beach Boys, Fall Out Boy. The list could go on. There are some many great bands out there.

Estrella: What would you be doing if you weren't in a band?
Chris: We would all be doing something that involves music. I know some of us would want to go to school for music production, start a label or venue. Pretty much anything to contribute to local and national music scenes.

Estrella: Who writes most of the music, lyrically and also music wise?
Chris: We all contribute to the music. Sometimes one person will come with a basic idea, and we all will come up with ideas on where it could go. And occasionally one person will have a whole song written and we will work from there, depending on what we like or dislike. But I usually come up with lyrics. Unless someone else has some written that we want to use.

Estrella: How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard it?
Chris: I would say our EP is more pop punk, but our live show and new songs are more rock n roll / punk rock with different influences incorporated within every song. Some songs have more of a hardcore feel, some have more of a poppy feel.

Estrella: What are you currently listening to?
Chris: We listen to a lot of Coheed and Cambria, Fall Out Boy, Spitalfield, Alkaline Trio, Dream Theatre, all kinds of stuff.

Estrella: What do you enjoy most about being in a band?
Chris: I just love writing music. I’ve been writing my own songs since I first picked a guitar. I always write a song while thinking of the drums, bass, and vocals behind it. So writing with the rest of the guys is a lot of fun. And then going up on stage and playing the song I wrote in my room a month ago in front of 1000 or even 10 kids is really awesome.

Estrella: What do you like about your fans?
Chris: I just love meeting new people when we are on the road. I was never popular in high school. So its fun. And the fans back in KC are great. We have a really good music scene, and they treat us really well.

Estrella: What are your goals for the band?
Chris: We all love music so much that all we want to do is make a living off of our records and touring. I wouldn’t care if I barely had enough money to live off of. I would love to just tour all the time.

Estrella: Do you have any good tour stories? If so, please state one.
Chris: Actually, we just got back from tour on the east coast, and we had the day off in Delaware. So us and our buddy Lucky from Delaware, went down to Wildwood, New Jersey to watch the sunrise and hang out at the beach. When we got there it was rainy and cold as hell, and we noticed all these signs that said ‘Welcome Bands’ and ‘Battle of the Bands May 1st through 3rd. So we thought, ‘Hey, we should try and get on that.’ So we fell asleep in the van in this parking lot by the beach. But around 9am, we started hearing these thumping noises. At first I thought I was dreaming it, so I went back to sleep. Then they started to get louder and more of them joined in. So we got up and looked outside to see a fucking drum line practicing before their show right beside our van. There was some school marching band convention at the same beach we were staying at. But instead of leaving, sat there and bitched for about 15 minutes, I guess hoping that they would just leave. But they didn’t. So we went and parked at a McDonalds and slept. And the worst thing is.. We didn’t even get to see the sunrise because it was so foggy. That’s the east coast for ya.

Estrella: Do you have any advice for bands getting started?
Chris: Keep playing what you enjoy playing. That’s all that matters. Don’t play whatever is popular, you never know who is going to hear you and want to invest in your band.

Estrella: Do you have any last statements?
Chris: Nope.. Now I cant think of a catchy response. :). Thanks. Chris*OLH
