HALIFAX

June 22, 2004
[interview by Alexa]

Estrella: Could you please state your name and what you do in the band.
Mike: My name is Mike, I'm the lead singer of Halifax
Adam: I'm Adam and I play guitar.

Estrella: How did all the members meet? And I know you went through a bunch of people too, so I mean the final lineup.
Mike: It's a complicated story.
Adam: Kevin, Chris, and I went to high school together but Kevin was a year ahead of me and Chris was two years behind me. So Kevin and I, were not in this band at all, and Chris was in this band called, Halifax, with this guy Mike, and I told Chris, "Hey Chris, if you ever get an oppurtunity, let me join your band." He's like, "Alright, anyways, blah blah blah." So, then this band Halifax kicked out two members and Chris was like, "Adam, do you want to be in Halifax?", I was like, "Alright", so I joined Halifax along with our new drummer Tommy.
Tommy: Hi.
Mike: Who's up here with us, by the way.
Tommy: How you doing?
Mike: This is Tommy from Halifax, the drummer.
Tommy: How's it going?
Adam: And then, after about two months of that, we got rid of the bassist we had then. Everyone was like, "Hey Kevin from high school, remember him?, let's ask him to be in the band." So, he joined. That's five.

Estrella: Okay, so why did you want to start a band and then continue it?
Mike: Well, the original Halifax is just like a bad memory, it's just like a bunch of bad stuff, it just was not put together really well and what happened was me and Chris were very very close, we were basically the only two guys in the band who were friends and we just had songs that we wanted to play, just things that we wanted to do, that the rest of the old Halifax didn't want to do. So, we just kinda weeded out everything and just started finding some members who actually did want to do what we wanted to do. And rather then just changing the name and becoming a whole new band, we kept the name, just to piss off the old guys.
Tommy: Which it did.
Mike: Which it did. So, anyone who listens or reads this interview, we wanted to piss off old Halifax.
Tommy: Hi Matt. Hi Dan.
Mike: Yeah, Matt & Dan, this pisses you off hopefully.
Adam: As far as staying in the band, we all really love music and that's why. It's not at holding grudge to music.
Mike: No grudge at all.
Adam: We all recently just dropped out of college, to show our dedication for the band, full time.

Estrella: What would you be doing if you weren't in the band?
Adam: I was going to the University for Recording Arts for studio stuff, if I wasn't a musician.
Tommy: I'd probably, honestly would have moved back to Hawaii and probably went to college there.
Mike: I'd probably just be going to community college.
Estrella: Yeah, that's me.

Estrella: Who writes most of the songs, lyrically and musically wise?
Mike: Well, the record we have out, "A Writer's Reference", with basically, me - Mike, and Chris, so the two of kind of wrote everything pretty much. That's when the new guys were kinda coming in. It's pretty much just the two of us and Adam and Tommy added to it too when they came in. The new record and the new stuff is more like collaborating together. Like, last night in the van, we just wrote alot of the songs together as a band.

Estrella: If you could be in a different band that played a different genre of music, would you do it and what type of music would it be?
Mike: Honestly, I like what I'm doing, but I really wouldn't change it just for anything, just cause other type of people, not necessarily the industry as in like labels, but the band, you meet some awesome people and they're such good friends, that I probably wouldn't change it for anything else.
Adam: If I could play back up for Justin Timberlake, I'd do it in a heartbeat, there's no doubt about that.
Tommy: Or Britney Spears. Yeah, I would drum for her.
Mike: I would drum for her.

Estrella: Who are some of your influences?
Adam: Iron Maiden.
Tommy: We have alot of influences, I would say.
Mike: Everything, everyone we listen to. We don't listen to just one genre. So you can't really pinpoint it.

Estrella: What are you currently listening to?
Adam: My Chemical Romance.
Mike: Yeah, My Chemical Romance is the best cd I have ever heard, so good.
Tommy: It's everything, reggae, hardcore, metal, pop-punk, rock, everything.
Mike: Boys Night Out, ExcessDB. Promotion.

Estrella: How do you feel about playing Hellfest tomorrow?
Tommy: We're all excited.
Mike: We're excited now, but when I first heard it, so scared.
Adam: Mike and Tommy come up from a different background. I honestly, grew up on playing these things. This is gonna be a big experience for me.
Mike: I'm just surpised we got invited to play Hellfest, it's exciting, not being a really hardcore band.

Estrella: How do you feel about playing the Warped Tour?
Mike: Adam and I went to the one in Ventura just to hang out and then all of us went to Salt Lake City, cause we were playing that night, and it was just, we didn't even play, we had an awesome time.
Adam: I grew up on Warped Tour, it's the summer.
Mike: It's actually like a blessing to be apart of it.

Estrella: Do you have any crazy fan stories?
Adam: Not a single one. Our fans are boring.
Mike: We had one fan that spent $15 at the dollar store and bought us food, that's about it.
Adam: In one interview I did, I said I wanted a fan to bake me a cake and bring it to a show, so I got all these people telling me they'd bring me cake to a show, and not one person did it.
Estrella: I feel bad, I sometimes bring cupcakes.
Mike: Oh, don't worry about it. Next time, though.
Adam: Yeah, next time.
Estrella: I can't bring it to Warped Tour, it'll all like melt.

Estrella: What's your best Halloween costume ever?
Tommy: Adam's Bunny suit
Adam: That was Easter, dude. That was Easter.
Tommy: It's still a Halloween costume, okay?
Mike: I was a cereal killer once, that was cool. I had cereal boxes around my neck and a big knife. But me and my sister, back in the day, we both dressed up like tennis players in white clothes, white shorts, white socks, and white shoes, and had tennis raquets and had like a knife going through us.
Adam: Stabby McTennis.

Estrella: And lastly, do you have any closing statements?
Adam: www.halifaxrock.com, we're on MySpace if you want to add us on MySpace.
Tommy: Make sure you go to Best Buy and pick up the cd, go there and get.
Mike: And thank you, cause like, I don't think we ever really thought that Halifax would even be at the point it's at. Just everyone who has been at our shows and who's been listening to us, we really appreciate it.
Adam: The only thing that would make it better is brownies and cakes. I mean, that might be a lot of stuff, but it's cool and thank you.
Estrella: Thank you.
Mike: Thank you.
