From Under The Cork Tree
Fall Out Boy

[review by Jess]

Everyone has one - an album which is good, nothing particularly amazing, but you like it… apart from one song. There’s one song that takes your breath away, makes you stop what you’re doing, nod your head….. and dance! Yeah! Well, I do anyway…and if you do too, then welcome to Fall Out Boy’s ‘From Under The Cork Tree’.

Opener, ‘Our Lawyer Made Us Change The Name Of This Song So We Wouldn’t Get Sued’ is alright, it’s a good, bouncy choice of introduction into the world of Fall Out Boy, although you already knew you weren’t going to take this band seriously. How could you not? They’re a band named after a Simpsons character who write songs with titles such as ‘I Slept With Someone From Fall Out Boy & All I Got Was This Stupid Song Written About Me’. Exactly.

Track two, “Of All The Gin Joints…" bugger it, it’s taking me long enough to type out the titles to remember what I was saying… just skip to track three, ‘Dance, Dance’. WOOOAAAHHH!!! This song is absolutely amazing. And it only took me two seconds to type it's name, a name which sums the song up perfectly. All you want to do is dance! I’ve been stuck in bed with tonsillitis for most of the week but I leapt out of bed and formed a dance routine to it almost straight away. I did regret it, but that’s all this song makes you want to do. The best thing about it though is the fact that there’s a tambourine being played slightly too quietly in the background. I managed to find my old Early Learning Centre one and I joined in. I felt like I was on stage. That’s the brilliant thing about Fall Out Boy, by listening to them you’re instantly detached from all your current problems, your only worry is that you might bump your head on the ceiling whilst jumping up and down to their music. The only bad thing about ‘Dance, Dance’ is the fact that it ends so suddenly. They should have put it on again for track four but under a different name, no one would have complained, they would have loved it! Well, apart from the fact that track four, ‘Sugar, We’re Goin’ Down’ is apparently the big hit of the album. Err, what? Yeah, it’s a good song but come on people! ‘Dance, Dance’!

You can imagine each member of Fall Out Boy being a team leader at a summer camp, friendly, enthusiastic boys bursting with energy. [I don’t think they’re gay]. I think it’s actually impossible to be depressed whilst listening to ‘From Under The Cork Tree’, it’s the best replacement to a bear hug and huge bar of chocolate. They’re not sickly and tacky in a Simple Plan kind of way, mainly because vocalist, Patrick Stump, has the prettiest voice in pop punk today. They seem to be able to write good lyrics too, especially on bittersweet ‘Sugar, We’re Goin’ Down’, “Oh don’t mind me. I’m watching you two from the closet. Wishing to be the friction in your jeans. Isn’t it messed up how I’m just dying to be him?”

There are so many bands that use song titles and lyrics to take the piss out of being scene when they are the biggest hypocrites out there. “Get Busy Living Or Get Busy Dying [Do Your Part To Save The Scene And Stop Going To Shows]” is a genuine kick in the teeth to those who choose fashion over music. This band are all about having a good time, a simple idea which is too often overshadowed by looking good, especially in this genre of music…hang on. Can we go back to ‘Dance, Dance’? Sorry, it’s just I think I’ve figured out a whole new dance routine. Man, that song is so awesome! You can tell I’m excited, my exclamation mark key was covered in dust until I started writing this review.

‘From Under The Cork Tree’ is brilliant. I’ve never been a huge fan of Fall Out Boy, but this album has changed my mind. Once my excitement over that song has calmed down, I’ll start paying more attention to the other songs, but I already know that I like them. I like this whole album and I want all my friends to buy it, I’d prescribe it instead of prozac if I was a doctor….oh my, ‘Dance, Dance’ has come on again…this is my cue to leave.
