Estrella: Could you please state your name and what you do in the band?
Matthew: Hi, my name is Matthew Nanes and I play bass and do vocals.
Estrella: So why did you want to start a band?
Matthew: Well, I wasn't a part of the starting process of Day Two, for I've only been in Day Two for 9 months out of the one and a half years Day Two has been around, but why I've started bands is because it was fun playing in someone's basement. When I was younger I was always wanted to play shows and tour but never thought it was possible until high school. Joining Day Two has allowed me to do that and it's been a blast so far.
Estrella: How did all of the members meet?
Matthew: I've known Matt [drummer] and Sheldon [guitar] for quite awhile. They would play shows in their older bandsand I would hang out from time to time or help out at shows. I met Kevin [singer] through them and I knew Jake [guitar] from shopping at his Guitar Center. When the previous bass player and guitar player quit the band, they called me and asked if I wanted to try out. Jake was there at the try out and it just clicked.
Estrella: What do you enjoy most about being in Day Two?
Matthew: I love going on tour. It's the perfect mix of a vacation and work at the same time because you get to see so many places and see so many people. The shows are always fun but what makes the tour is how much fun you have as a band and the people you meet.
Estrella: So if you weren't in Day Two, what do you think you would be most likely doing?
Matthew: I'd probably still be playing in bands around Salt Lake City but I'd probably be going to college for an English major so I could become involved with education. Other than that, I would probably book shows for touring bands. I love helping people and being involved with music in that way [booking shows] would be perfect.
Estrella: How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard it?
Matthew: I would call it aggressive rock and roll with melodic hardcore influences. We're not hardcore but we love hardcore music, but it's just not what we choose to play. We have much more influences than just hardcore.
Estrella: Who writes most of the music, lyrically and also music wise?
Matthew: For the last record, Kevin wrote most of the music and the whole band was involved in the lyric writing process. As of right now, it seems like anyone can throw out an idea and we'll work on that and try different things. It's just not one person anymore so the music we're making now is much more diverse.
Estrella: Who are some of your influences?
Matthew: I love The Smashing Pumpkins. They got me into music in general and made me passionate about expressing myself. Fugazi is a huge influence on me because they are the epitome of integrity and they're always pushing their music into new places. AFI was groundbreaking to me as well because they got me into hardcore when I first saw them on their first Black Sails on The Sunset tour. It exposed me to a whole new world.
Estrella: What are you currently listening to?
Matthew: Right now, I'm listening to some new songs of Onelinedrawing. So amazing, everyone should check out Onelinedrawing because his songs are so simple yet they speak volumes. Death Cab for Cutie's "Transatlanticism" is a masterpiece. There's also Denali, Shai Hulud, the new Saves The Day album which I think is amazing and people should give it another chance, they're writing some great pop music.
Estrella: What do you like about your fans?
Matthew: What I like about them is that they're not afraid to get into it at our shows. It seems lately kids just like to stand there while at a show with their arms folded. C'mon kids! Get into it! It's not an art exhibit! If you want to sing along, move your feet or hardcore dance, go for it!
Estrella: Do you have any crazy fans? If so, a good story about one?
Matthew: I think a good story is just recently at our Valentine's Day show, there was a girl in the front row just screaming at the top of her lungs about how much she loves our guitar player, Sheldon. She just wouldn't stop while we were setting up. It was a really awkward yet really funny moment for me.
Estrella: Do you have any good tour stories? If so, please state one.
Matthew: There was one time we were on tour in Sacramento where a few of us went to a restaurant to watch the Super Bowl. We met a really drunk guy there who wanted to buy us drinks. We told him we were going to go and play a show and he wanted to come along. We weren't quite sure what to do, so Matt told him just to follow us. He did follow us, but into our van. We drove to the show with him and he was so annoying at the show! He would pinch or tickle the bands on the stage and yell really loudly. While we were playing, I guess he said something to the wrong person and he got beat up. That taught us to never pick up any drunk people at Mexican restaurants ever again.
Estrella: Do you have any last comments?
Matthew: I do, thanks for reading this interview and this website and if you want to check us out, go to www.hxcmp3.com/Day Two. Thank you so much!
