Billy Talent
Billy Talent

[review by Jess]

Billy Talent were recommended to me after my best friend saw them at Reading 2003 and the first time I heard the album, I thought it was just stupid. I couldn’t take it seriously, the way Ian D’Sa sings had me in stitches. My best friend got a bit pissed off at me because I couldn’t stop laughing each time I heard it, so I decided to buy a copy myself and see whether I could listen to it without wetting myself.

If I hear the album now, I don’t know why I ever laughed in the first place. I could listen to it over and over all day. The first track, “This Is How It Goes” is absolutely brilliant, it’s an amazing song to dance to when drunk and even better if you try and sing to it when drunk. “Try Honesty” is also terribly catchy, it’ll have you grooving in your seat – it’s hardly an album to listen to if you’re trying to work. “Line and Sinker” has the brilliant line “Santa seemed to miss my chimney” which you D’Sa sings like a comical moody toddler. One of my favourite tracks on the album is “Nothing to Lose”, the lyrics are beautiful and thought-provoking; an adjective I never thought I’d use to describe the band who used to give me jaw-ache.

I think this album could appeal to anyone and everyone, on first listen I thought it might be for the punk-hardcore types but even my ska-mad friend absolutely adores it. I would kill to see this band live as I have read so many good reviews and you can tell by the essence of the whole album that they put everything they have into what they do. Definitely worth buying.
