Many of you probably won’t have heard of A Small Victory before, they are a small band from a small town in Georgia, however they are now signed to the same record label that Yellowcard started out on. A Small Victory are a powerful Emo band with a punk rock edge and a rock n roll strut & with all those elements they serve up a great debut album in the form of ‘El Camino’.
The album is kicked off in great style with ‘Limousines and Cheap Cigars’, which is a really catchy tune and instantly shows off how well singer Mark Walker’s vocals and his band mates driving instrumentals compliment each other. It’s one of my favourite songs from this album and has a really catchy chorus in which Mark sings “Close the blind, brace the door. That’s right, when you sleep you better keep an open eye tonight” and this song also has a truly rock ‘n’ roll guitar solo which just adds to the appeal of this band. ‘Blindman’s Holiday’ is another great track with another great guitar riff and is followed in great fashion by ‘Otis’ in which Mark Walker’s sound beautiful and the song in another one which will get your foot tapping & has some great lyrics like, “Like when you tell me you don’t miss me, there’s nothing in me but a bottle of whiskey”.
Then there’s ‘Stabbing Tree’ which slows things and is a darker track from ASV with lyrics like “I only scream when the lights go out, and I’m terrified trying to figure myself out”. Then there are songs like ‘Sirens Over Sinclare’ and ‘Random Celebration’ that gets this album back on track with the catchy lyrics and awesome guitar riffs. The album ends on ‘James Dean B-Side’ which is a great last track and probably has Mark Walker’s vocals at their best and the backing vocals on the chorus sound awesome and this song is a great example of what makes this band so great.
A Small Victory are a band that deserves to be a lot bigger than they are but with their future being unsure due to Singer Mark Walker’s recent departure, where are they to go from here. Both Mark Walker and A Small Victory still plan on making more music separately in the future but before that happens, people should check out the music they all made together because it rocks.
