“Where ever you go, I will be waiting, whenever you call I will be there. Whatever it takes, I’ll make your darkest days so bright. I’m in your heart tonight,” was the quiet recitation across miles of telephone wire. On the other side, she smiled, trying to sort his passion from the words he didn’t write. It was a band called Amber Pacific, he told her later, lines from the song ‘Gone So Young’, but when he said it, he meant it, regardless of who had said it first.
Amber Pacific have some of the most versatile punk loves songs you’re likely to encounter, from their single ‘Poetically Pathetic’, to the slower, more nostalgic tracks like ‘If I Fall’. You would be hard pressed to find a note of bitterness in The Possibility and the Promise. In their first full length album, the band bounds into the scene with the same introverted energy listeners sampled in their EP, Fading Days.
Amber Pacific differs from your run of the mill emo-punkers in several ways, the most obvious being the context and nature of their music. Combining themes of always-and-forever love with the usual heavy guitars and blazing riffs has an interesting effect. The words lose some of their impact, but the melodies get a little more punch from the drowning message. Another difference is the low range preferred by vocalist Matt Young. AP’s style works well enough for awhile but somewhere after the fifth track things start to get a little hazy. The band plays it safe this album and doesn’t venture beyond the bounds of their established sound. They probably won’t be the most amazing or catchiest thing you’re likely to hear, but something they have to say may just hit you dead on.
